Early in my career, I asked my team lead why we had to do a process that seemed unnecessary.
His gruff reply? "Because I said so."
Ever since that day, if someone questions me, I strive to clearly convey why.
I don't want you to do something merely because I said so. I want to assure you understand why. And I want you to feel empowered to question my logic and push back.
If I can't justify my why, then I need to reflect.
This is especially true with my kids.
I remember my parents saying “because I said so” to me, and it always bugged me.
So, I don’t say this to my kids. I take a deep breath and try to explain why.
They don’t always agree, but I want them to truly understand my reasoning.
