I often talk to developers who are thinking about going independent.
My advice:
1. Build a business while you have a full-time job.
2. Don’t quit your job until your side business is so successful that you can’t justify staying at your job anymore.
Easy? No.
Safe? Yep.
I took 3 months unpaid leave to focus on my consulting business. After 3 months, I still had more work than I could handle, so I knew I was on to something.
I quit my full-time job when my side hustle was earning significantly more than my full-time Principal Engineer role.
