Quick story about humility: I recently met someone new at a conference dinner

Quick story about humility:

I recently met someone new at a conference dinner. Within a few minutes, he told me about his multiple degrees, various books he has read, and shared his vast knowledge outside of software.

His goal wasn’t to get to know me, or to validate his ideas. It appears his goal was to impress me with his intelligence and superiority. His tone was condescending and confrontational.

This is the point where I was tempted to end the conversation. But, I could see he was very intelligent.

So, I ignored his tone, listened intently, and asked questions. I wanted to see what I could learn from him.

I learned a many things in our conversation. But, I don’t think he learned anything from me.

Takeways:

1. If you're focused on proving you're smart, you're unlikely to learn anything new.

2. If you're focused on growth, and willing to be humble, vulnerable, and ask questions, you can learn from anyone.

Anyone can teach me something. So, when I meet someone new, my goal isn’t to look smart. I’d rather learn.
