Quick story about my lucky Thanksgiving this year
Quick story about my lucky Thanksgiving this year.
Thanksgiving day, my family and I take a boat ride to an uninhabited island one hour east of Puerto Rico. We spend the morning snorkeling in the bay. It’s lovely.
While snorkeling, I keep my iPhone on a lanyard around my neck in a waterproof plastic sleeve. After an hour, I board the boat for lunch I realize: the lanyard disconnected from the bag!
My phone was somewhere in the Atlantic.
We use my wife's phone to try to locate it. The “Find my” app says the phone is offline, and can’t show me a precise location. We spend the next hour snorkeling and scanning the seafloor. No luck.
I figure it sank to the bottom, lost signal, and will soon be dead. So we give up, board the ship, and return to Puerto Rico.
The next morning, I’m shopping for a new phone when we get a call. It's the captain of our ship. Someone was snorkeling and found my phone in the water!
They return it to the ship's captain, who looks up my wife’s info from the previous day, and calls her.
And the moment they pulled it out of the water. it got a network signal, and sent me its location on "Find my". I was able to track the boat bringing my phone back.
I just picked up the phone from the captain. My iPhone survived over 24 hours in the ocean! It stayed dry in the bag, and shockingly still has 50% battery!
Interesting tech, and a surprising happy ending!
