Just hit 100k followers 🤯

Here are 10 things Twitter taught me about programming and life.

1. Focus on value for others and people will listen. Most my tweets are short programming insights. Before posting I ask “is this useful?”

2. Consistency matters. I committed to writing one useful post every morning, and my followers quickly doubled.

3. Good writing means throwing a lot of content away. I write multiple tweets every day. I only post the best one.

4. Success begets success. My follower count is growing faster as I get more followers. Momentum is powerful.

5. Avoid dogmatism. Prefer “avoid” over “never”. Prefer “I find” over “Everyone should”. Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

6. When you combine things that aren’t normally combined, people pay attention. Some of my most popular tweets combined programming with other topics.

7. Every decision in programming and life has tradeoffs. Looking for tradeoffs helps me understand other people’s preferences. And it helps me be pragmatic.

8. Spend as little time as you can arguing. I’m happy to dialogue with people who respectfully disagree. But I don’t waste my time on attacks. If a tweet gets enough attention, you will be attacked. I don’t bother replying, and don’t take it personally. Instead I ask “how could I have worded this better?”

9. There’s riches in the niches. My consulting company took off when I rebranded to focus on React. I make much more than I did as a general consultant. And my followers grew faster when I focused my tweets too.

10. There’s always someone more successful. But I’m not competing with you. I’m competing with who I was yesterday. I just want to help others and get a little better every day.

Thanks for following! 🙏
