Limiting work-in-progress is useful
Limiting work-in-progress is useful.
But, I’ve found the ideal number of tasks in progress is greater than one.
Why? Because I often get stumped, bored, or blocked. If I only have one task, I tend to waste time repeatedly failing instead of stepping away.
With multiple tasks, I can switch to a different task for awhile, and come back later with a fresh perspective.
To be clear, I don't suggest "multitasking" (doing 2+ things at the same time, poorly).
I work on one task at a given time. I switch tasks *occasionally* when useful/necessary.
I focus on one thing until tired/bored/stuck, then I move to something else. I limit WIP to around 3 items.
