I don’t set goals

I don’t set goals. I create systems.

Here are seven systems I’ve found useful.

My learning system
1. Subscribe to relevant newsletters (and read them!)

2. Listen to audiobooks while exercising or driving

3. Always have a least one book I’m reading

4. Teach (speak/author)

My exercise system
1. Lift weights daily

2. Walk on a treadmill for a few hours each day while working and reading

3. Bike often, especially for nearby destinations

4. Use my Apple Watch to monitor daily steps and exercise stats
My eating system
1. Spinach, protein powder, almond milk smoothie for breakfast

2. Fresh fruits, veggies, and deli meat at lunch

3. Avoid trans fat, high fructose corn syrup, seed oils, fried foods

4. Drink only water (rare exceptions for special occasions)
My income system
1. Maintain multiple income streams

2. Make no full-time commitments

3. Favor passive income opportunities

4. Increase my rates when I get too busy
My finance system
1. Buy for need, not to impress

2. Invest excess in low cost index funds

3. Buy cars in cash and keep them long-term

4. Spend less than I earn

5. Track monthly spending

6. Automate all payments

7. Look for the “sweet spot” (not too cheap, or too expensive)
My sleep system
1. Go to sleep early, so I’m guaranteed to get enough sleep

2. Wake naturally with the sun. No alarm clock. (See #1)

3. Avoid caffeine, alcohol

4. Consistent bedtime routine

5. Dim lighting 1 hour before bed
My motivation system
1. Spend time around people that inspire me

2. Avoid people who pull me down

3. Speak at conferences (to connect with people headed in the same direction, for free)

4. Read inspiring books

5. Strive to only accept work I believe in
These seven systems produce my desired results:

Frequent learning
Independence
Healthy body
Well rested
Sound finances
High motivation
