Years ago, I was programming in PHP. The company announced they were moving to off-the-shelf software. They expected me to run the new system.
Instead, I quit.
Why? Administering off-the-shelf software ran counter to my goals. I wanted to be a *developer*.
No regrets.
Later, I wanted to move from PHP to C# and .NET. So I learned at home. I quit when I found a perfect fit: A company moving from PHP to .NET.
Years later, I was working in Knockout. I wanted to work in React the moment it was open sourced. So I learned it at home. Then, I convinced my boss to let us use it on a project.
Summary: I control where I’m headed, not my job. My career trajectory is my responsibility.
