Career tip: As tech moves faster, consider specializing

Career tip: As tech moves faster, consider specializing.

2000 - I was "full stack", multiple langs. Generalist.
2010 - Still "full stack", but focused on .NET: C#, EF, SQL Server, JS, jQuery
2014 - Decided to specialize in JavaScript and React

Can't keep up? Pick a niche.
Anecdote: The more I specialize, the more autonomy and trust I'm given. Managers give specialists authority, freedom, and trust because they have proven depth in a specific area.
You can certainly be successful as a generalist too, but it's harder to get really good in a given area.

Early in your career, I recommend being a generalist - so you can figure out where you'd like to focus.
